Hot air balloon flights over Wadi Rum are real, but they don't run year-round and they don't fly every day. If you're planning around one, you need to know the seasonality, the cost, and the realistic chance the flight actually happens.
Short answer: Flights run October to April. Cost is 130-160 JOD per person. Sunrise only. Worth it if you have flexible dates.
When Balloons Fly
Wadi Rum balloons fly during the cooler months — roughly October through April. Outside that window, ground temperatures and thermal activity make it unsafe.
| Month | Flying? | Notes |
| Oct-Nov | Yes | Best months. Stable air, clear mornings. |
| Dec-Feb | Yes (weather-dependent) | Cold (near 0°C at takeoff). Cancellations common from wind. |
| Mar-Apr | Yes | Excellent visibility. Book early. |
| May-Sep | No | Too hot. No flights. |
Even in season, expect ~25% of flights to be cancelled day-of due to wind. Operators won't fly if conditions aren't safe — which is exactly what you want from a balloon company.
What It Costs
| Item | Price (per person) |
| Standard balloon flight (60 min) | 130-160 JOD |
| Private/charter basket | 800-1,200 JOD (whole basket, 4-6 people) |
| Transfer from camp to launch site | Usually included |
| Breakfast or coffee after landing | Sometimes included |
Compare to Cappadocia (180-280 EUR ≈ 145-220 JOD per person) — Wadi Rum is cheaper. Compare to Luxor (90-120 USD ≈ 65-85 JOD) — Wadi Rum is pricier, but the landscape is more dramatic.
What You Actually See
Takeoff is around 30 minutes before sunrise. You drive from your camp to the launch site at 04:30-05:30 depending on season.
The basket lifts to anywhere from 200m to 1,000m above the desert floor. From up there:
- The sandstone jebels (mountains) — some rising 1,750m — look like islands in a red sea.
- The shadows of the rock formations stretch for kilometers as the sun rises.
- You see Bedouin camps below as tiny clusters of black tents.
- On clear mornings, you can see all the way to the Saudi border.
The flight lasts 45-60 minutes. Landing depends on wind direction — you don't pick where you land, the wind does. Chase vehicles follow the balloon and pick you up wherever you come down.
Balloon vs. Other Wadi Rum Experiences
Honest comparison:
| Experience | Cost (JOD) | Time | Worth it? |
| Hot air balloon | 130-160 | 3-4 hours total | Yes if dates flexible |
| Half-day jeep tour | 35-50 | 4 hours | Always |
| Sunrise hike | Free (with guide tip) | 1 hour | Always |
| Camel ride sunset | 20-30 | 2 hours | Yes once |
Honest take: don't replace the jeep tour with the balloon. Add the balloon on top if your budget and dates allow.
Wadi Rum Balloon vs. Cappadocia vs. Luxor
People who've flown all three usually rank them like this:
- Cappadocia: Most balloons in the sky at once (50-100+ at sunrise). Best for photos. Most touristy. Most expensive.
- Wadi Rum: Far fewer balloons (sometimes you're alone in the sky). Most dramatic terrain. Cheaper than Cappadocia.
- Luxor: Cheapest. Flatter views (Nile valley, fields). Less dramatic.
If you've already done Cappadocia, Wadi Rum still surprises because the landscape is so different.
Safety
The two operators flying in Wadi Rum are Jordanian Civil Aviation licensed. Pilots are experienced (most trained in Egypt or Europe). The biggest risk isn't safety — it's cancellation.
What to know:
- Flights cancel for wind, not for clouds.
- Refunds are usually full if cancelled by operator.
- If you cancel, partial refund only.
- Wear closed shoes. The landing can be bumpy.
- People with severe back issues or recent surgery should consult a doctor first.
How to Actually Book This
- Pick a flexible date. Build in a second-chance morning in case Day 1 is cancelled.
- Book it as an add-on to your camp stay. We coordinate the early pickup. Easier than booking solo from Amman.
- Plan it for Day 2 or Day 3. You want to land back in time for breakfast, not be exhausted on arrival day.
- Confirm the night before. Operators decide weather call at 21:00-22:00.
- Layers. Pre-dawn at altitude in February is genuinely cold (5-10°C). Once the burner is on, you're warm.
